Google Engineer Dan Morrill Sheds Some Light On The Nexus OTA Process

The Android 4.4 update, aka KitKat, still has yet to roll out to a 
large number of Nexus device owners out there. And, in desperation, some
 users are resorting to methods they probably don't fully understand in 
order to get the OTA, one of which is clearing the Google Service 
Framework data. This method isn't new, but it's one whose side effects 
are not generally considered by those who use it, at least according to 
Google engineer Dan Morrill.<br />

In <a class="external" href="http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1r1n5z/psa_do_not_clear_data_for_google_service_framework/cdiymrp" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a reddit thread</a>
 on the subject, Morrill states, essentially, that clearing the 
framework data is going to break stuff. Specifically, any apps relying 
on GCM functionality (Google Cloud Messenger) for things like push 
updates may freak out, stop sending notifications, or engage in other 
odd / less than useful behavior. Specifically, he says the following 
about clearing the Google Service Framework:<br />

 this changes the primary ID by which Google knows your device. As far 
as the servers are concerned, the device was basically factory reset. 
There are many downstream effects of this, but a big one is that this 
invalidates the tokens used by any app that uses GCM (which is nearly 
all the Google apps, and a ton of third-party apps.)

How apps react to GCM IDs changing varies by app. With Play Store
 you have to log out and log back in, I think Gmail usually handles it 
transparently eventually but won't get new mail notifications for a 
while, etc. Some apps you may have to clear data on to recover. All apps
 will simply stop getting GCM push-messages, until they get a new GCM 
ID; some do this frequently, others rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID
 as an ID on their own servers (as it is opaque and basically random), 
so other things besides push messages may not work.

Nothing bursts into flames, but it makes a ton of nuisances on 
the device, including some that can look pretty mysterious. Your mileage
 will vary depending on what apps you use.

All of this can be avoided by just doing an 'adb sideload' if you are impatient.<br />

No, it's not the end of the world, but it's the kind of thing that 
you'd probably end up factory resetting just to solve, and that sort of 
defeats the purpose of a no-wipe update, doesn't it? Instead, Morrill 
asks that eager power users utilize the adb sideload command to flash 
the update manually and avoid all this potential messiness.

In <a class="external" href="http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1r1dz4/44_kitkat_has_started_rolling_out_on_the_n4/cdiwt6f" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">a separate thread</a>,
 Morrill discusses the Nexus OTA rollout process, and why during the 
first day or two of the update's release only a very small portion of 
phones are selected to receive it.<br />

Rollouts are conducted in phases. Typically they start at 1% of 
devices for around 24 - 48 hours; we watch the return rates and 
resulting device checkins and error reports (if any), and make sure 
nothing looks wrong before sending it to more. Then typically it goes to

What the percentages mean is that when your device checks in, it 
has a 1% chance (for example) of being offered the OTA. If it doesn't 
(randomly) get an offer, it will never get an offer until the next 
batch.

until the next batch. Mashing on the "check for updates" button just 
causes your device to check in again, and get automatically turned down 
again. Think about how that makes your device feel! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE

That said, once the new batch does start, hitting that button 
does give you a new roll of the dice -- but once. Since devices usually 
only check in for system updates every 24 hours (I think? Certainly on a
 many-hours basis) this can get you your shot sooner than it would 
happen on its own.

So, mash away. :) Just be patient, and mashing on it more often than once or twice a day isn't going to gain you anything.

 You're not racing other devices to get your slot in the current batch,

So, tapping furiously at your check update button actually does 
absolutely nothing in any practical sense, though I suspect most of us 
were already intuitively aware of that fact. The batch system for 
rollouts is basically what you'd imagine, too - as the days go on, the 
group receiving the update grows, until eventually it is available to 
all devices.

Many Google apps received a redesign in time for the launch of 
KitKat, but the Google Translate app was not one of them. Well, its day

The camera, microphone, and handwriting input options have been moved
 to the top, and results appear in a clean list below. This should make 
getting useful translations that much easier.<br />

The update introduces more language support for the app's handwriting
 feature, so users can manually write words in Esperanto, Hebrew, or 
Japanese and expect results. In addition to that, the camera translation
 feature, where users can take a photo of text and highlight which words
 to translate, now has support for Malay and Ukrainian.<br />

ZTE <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/hands-rest-ztes-android-phones-mwc-including-two-quad-core-devices" sl-processed="1">introduced these devices </a>in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress, but this marks the first American appearances of its high-end <a href="http://androidcentral.com/tags/pf112" sl-processed="1">PF112</a>, seen above.</div><div style="text-align: center;">And high-end is an understatement indeed. The PF112 is packing a  gorgeous 4.5-inch display with 1028 x 720 resolution that adds up to a  vivid, colorful experience. We’ve got a nice 8MP camera around back, and  HSPA+ radios under the hood. ZTE still won’t dish on what processor  it’s using, but based on how fluid <a href="http://androidcentral.com/tags/ics" sl-processed="1">Ice Cream Sandwich</a> looked on the device, and the specs of its lower-end Era, we’d be willing to bet it’s a quad-core model.</div><div style="text-align: center;">One step down from the PF112 is the <a href="http://androidcentral.com/tags/era" sl-processed="1">Era</a>,  that is second-in-command in ZTE’s flagship line. It’s packing a  quad-core AP30 in-house processor, as well as the same 8 MP camera and  HSPA+ radios as its older sibling. Where ZTE skimped a bit here is the  display: at 4.3-inches, the Era is packing qHD resolution with TFT  technology. Like the PF112, the Era is running Ice Cream Sandwich with  little if any customization from ZTE.</div><div style="text-align: center;">As you’ll see in the photos and videos after the break, ZTE  definitely put some thought into its Android offferings. Spec-for-spec,  the flagship devices match some of the best phones on the market today.  We don’t know if that’s enough for ZTE to make a splash here in the  United States, though, especially considering the lack of LTE on its  flagship line. Both are the latest entries in their respective iconic lines, and both should serve their carriers well.</div><div style="text-align: center;">But while they're both HTC phones, it's obvious they're from  different cuts of the cloth. As we've already written, the EVO 4G LTE is  a close cousin to the <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-one-x" sl-processed="1">HTC One X</a>, in specs if not in name. The DInc 4G, meanwhile, is a continuation of the Incredible line. (As <a href="http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-droid-incredible-4g/172077-droid-incredible-4g-lte-not-htc-one-phone.html" sl-processed="1">I wrote in our forums</a>, it is not Verizon's version of the HTC One S, or the One X, or the One V. It's a completely different phone.)</div><div style="text-align: center;">The EVO is the more svelte of the pair, longer and leaner. The DInc  4G is more stout, with a smaller display and a rubberized, textured  removable battery cover. But it still feels pretty good to the touch,  thanks to the smaller form factor. </div><div style="text-align: center;">One common thread is <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-sense-4-complete-walkthrough" sl-processed="1">HTC Sense 4</a>,  which is similar in look and performance across both devices. Both  carry Beats audio, and both will be using the latest Qualcomm Krait S4  chip. Where things start to diverge is in the camera department. The  EVO, being a derivative of the HTC One line, has the all-important <a href="http://www.androidcentral.com/tags/imagesense" sl-processed="1">ImageSense</a> (or ImageChip) system. That means an incredibly quick shutter time (0.7  seconds), as opposed to the DInc 4G, which is still fairly fast, but  it's obviously not anything you could call "zero-lag" speed. We'll need  to test the DInc 4G camera in the wild, too, before passing final  judgment, but we're also not expecting images to turn out quite as  nice. </div><div style="text-align: center;">We've got a bevy of pics after the break. The rail between the screen and the keyboard was curved -- why was that, doesn't the screen just slide straight up?<br /><em>No</em>.  The screen slides to the left and up on a curved track.   Why is this cool?  It means you can give it a little push with your  right-hand thumb to slide the screen up -- just push to the left and up  slightly and out comes the screen.  Like the <a href="http://androidcentral.com/2008/09/androids-unique-unlocking-feature/" sl-processed="1">unlock feature we just mentioned</a>, it's a subtle and elegant difference from your standard smartphone.<br /><div style="text-align: center;">   </div>There are a lot of little touches of grace and elegance inside this G1, we can't wait to get one in our hands to find them all.</div>
