The free DuoLingo service already has an 
army of aspirational bilingual supporters, but that's no reason to rest 
on your laurels. Today the developers have updated the Android app with a
 few changes to the user interface. The basics of the app have only been
 tweaked slightly - a digital spit and polish, if you will - but extra 
screens added to the end of lessons and progression screens should help 
users get a feel for where they are in the program.

The end of lessons screens show progress and improvement on a 
day-to-day basis, sot of like a fitness app or an RPG. Impressively, the
 developers have actually managed to shrink the app while expanding its 
capabilities. DuoLingo is now down to a mere 4.8MB download from 13.8MB,
 surely manageable on even the most frugal of data plans. I'd imagine 
that re-creating at least some of the app's visual assets had a lot to 
do with this. The tablet optimizations and offline support added earlier this year are still present. </div>

 It's a recently-funded Kickstarter campaign for a gadget that adds 
powered flight and remote control to a paper airplane. It's not much 
more than some gears, a rudder, and a Bluetooth control module, but the 
simplicity is appealing enough that it reached its $50,000 funding goal 
in less than eight hours. Now the campaign has passed $150,000, <a class="external" href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/393053146/powerup-30-smartphone-controlled-paper-airplane/posts/677819" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the stretch funding goal for the creation of an Android app</a> in addition to iOS</div>

The PowerUp is basically a 21st century take on the old rubber band 
airplane, those cheap concoctions of balsa wood or Styrofoam that line 
hobby shop walls. It's a sort of outboard motor for a paper plane: an 
electronic module with a Bluetooth chip at the front connected to a 
rudder and propeller at the back. The pre-production version of the 
plane motor has been given an iOS app that controls the output of the 
propeller and the yaw of the rudder via Bluetooth. </div>

It's not clear why PowerUp creator Shai Goitein didn't think an 
Android app was necessary at the $50,000 level, or indeed why a triple 
funding goal was needed in order to serve a platform comprising about 
four-fifths of the smartphone market. (According to the description, 
Goetein and company have been working on the iOS app for 18 months.) The
 Bluetooth 4.0 module in the device will necessitate and Android 4.3 or 
later phone or tablet with a compatible Bluetooth radio. </div>

for one device and go up to several hundred for beta packages and extra 
hardware. PowerUp 3.0 is scheduled to ship in May of next year (though 
Kickstarter campaigns should always be approached with a healthy heap of
 skepticism), but there is no guarantee that the Android app will be 
available at launch. </div>

All kidding aside, there seem to be some serious issues with Virgin's
 new TV Anywhere app for Android, starting with the aforesaid KitKat 
support. Other early reviews are decrying the lack of support for older,
 non-TiVo Virgin DVRs and the rooted device restriction, which American 
football fans can probably sympathize with. Others want to watch TV over
 the mobile network, and again, this is a common restriction when it 
comes to live TV streaming. Device support is spotty as well: the Nexus 
5, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S4 are showing as incompatible for me, 
though your results may vary. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you can get over all that, Virgin TV Anywhere offers a full 
program guide and remote recording, even when you're on 3G. The app also
 works as a basic remote for the TiVo box to make searching for shows 
easier. The interface isn't great, but it does at least follow the 
general look of the TiVo menus. Naturally you'll need to be a Virgin 
Media TV customer to log in to the app. </div>

there's only Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, and Pandora. If you're a 
regular user of these services, you shouldn't have any trouble 
justifying the purchase. If not... well, you could look at it as a $24 
streaming gadget, assuming that you would have spent at least six bucks 
on movies. </div>

The Angry Birds franchise has thus far been

launched free and ad-supported on Android, and later versions added

Eagle. But it looks like Rovio is pulling out all the stops when it 
comes to the upcoming kart racer, Angry Birds Go. <a class="external" href="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/Android/Angry+Birds+Go%21/news.asp?c=55580" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pocket Gamer reports</a>
 that gamers in New Zealand (where the game is getting an early launch 
on iOS) are finding it positively stuffed with in-app purchases</div>

The game apparently includes just about every kind of IAP scheme you 
can think of. It's got the dual-currency system for upgrades and kart 
purchases: coins and gems, the latter of which you can buy with real 
money. It's got a time-based wait system, most frustratingly 
demonstrated with EA's Real Racing 3: your bird gets tired after five 
races, after which you'll have to either tag in another bird, pay Gems 
to "re-energize" it, or wait until it's ready to go again. And if that 
wasn't enough, Angry Birds Go uses the Hasbro Telepod system for zapping
 in unlockable characters and bonuses with toys from your local 
retailer, in the same vein as Skylanders and Disney Infinity. This was 
previously seen in <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/09/18/new-game-angry-birds-star-wars-ii-hits-the-play-store-with-prequel-based-characters-and-telepod-toy-integration/">Angry Birds Star Wars II</a>.</div>

It might seem obvious from the fact that Rovio has turned Angry Birds
 into a world-striding colossus of a mobile franchise, but they really 
don't seem to care any more. Angry Birds Go shows all the symptoms of a 
game and a developer that are interested in wringing as much real cash 
out of gamers as possible. The in-app purchases for Gems have the usual 
markups, and gamers can purchase upgraded karts directly - the most 
expensive and presumably fastest is a full £69.99 or $99.99. This kind 
of extravagance isn't unusual from developers who wouldn't know 
restraint if it smacked them with a two-by-four, but it's disheartening 
to see it from a developer that was previously so reasonable. </div>

It's a shame, too: Rovio delivers rock-solid games with reliably 
balanced mechanics, and Angry Birds Go is their most ambitious technical
 project to date. If anyone can get the casual crowd into a racing game,
 it's them. But I predict that Rovio will have a lot of frustrated fans 
on their hands after the first few racing rounds, much like EA did with 
Real Racing 3. And if they continue down this path, we'll be looking at 
new Rovio releases with the same tired cynicism as Glu and Gamevil. </div>

Chromecast has been slowly but steadily adding support from major media apps since it launched: Hulu Plus, Pandora, and HBO GO
 have joined Netflix and Google's own Play Music, Play Movies, and 
YouTube. Apparently the Big G thinks this is enough to warrant a 
dedicated sub-section of the Play Store, <a class="external" href="http://on-device/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">as spotted by Google Operating System</a>.
 Depending on your device and its resolution, it might show up on the 
main Apps page or necessitate a quick swipe to the left to open the 
Categories menu. </div>

There's not much to it: the feature is just a list of the seven apps 
mentioned above, plus an embedded "how to cast" video at the top. But 
it's showing up even on phones and tablets that don't have the 
Chromecast app installed, which would seem to indicate that Google is 
interested in promoting its miniature streaming wonder. It's also a 
positive indication (though by no means a conclusive one) that Google 
intends to keep expanding the selection of Chromecast-compatible apps. 
That being said, it's a bit odd to see that the Chromecast app itself is
 not included in the list. </div>

If you've got a Chromecast and you're a regular user of any of the 
supported services, odds are that you don't need this kind of thing - 
you've already got your streaming and Chromecast apps handy. But at 
least it shows that the Chromecast isn't going anywhere anytime soon... 
unlike certain orb-shaped streamers we could name. </div>

As part of an effort to expand adoption of 
CyanogenMod, the developers recently released the CyanogenMod Installer 
app in Google Play. All was well for a few weeks, but today Google 
contacted the CyanogenMod team to explain that the installer app was in 
violation of Google Play’s policies. So, the CM folks agreed to take the
 app down.</div>

The app acts as a tool to help users get their devices connected to a
 computer over ADB – it doesn't actually do any of the heavy lifting of 
unlocking and flashing the device. All that is handled by the desktop 
client that connects over ADB. Google's rationale for the removal was 
that the CM Installer app ‘encourages users to void their warranty,’ 
which is unacceptable even if it doesn't technically violate a rule <strong>(see update below)</strong>. Of course, by that logic most root-only apps and tools encourage people to void warranties. </div>

The installer app is still available for download on the CM site when
 people click "Get Started." It can be sideloaded like any other app 
after Unknown Sources is enabled in the settings. CyanogenMod is also 
submitting the app to the <a class="external" href="http://www.amazon.com/?tag=androidpolice-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Amazon">Amazon</a> and Samsung app stores, where it will probably be rejected. Apparently it's harder to go legit that we thought. </div>

Note, the app may still show up with a <a class="external" href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cyanogenmod.oneclick" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">direct link</a> for a while, but it's already gone from search results. </div>

<strong>Update</strong>: According to the CM blog post, Google as 
much as admitted the app wasn't violating the letter of the law, but was
 still going to be removed. The <a class="external" href="http://play.google.com/about/developer-distribution-agreement.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">developer agreement</a>
 specifically gives Google broad authority to remove material from 
Google Play "at its sole discretion." The document uses the phrase 
several times in section 7.2 to make the point. This section also refers
 to Google's agreements with carriers and OEMs superseding those made 
with developers. That may be part of the issue as well.</div>

<strong>Update 2</strong>: Koushik Dutta has just linked to the <a class="external" href="https://github.com/cyngn/OneClickAndroid" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">newly released source code</a> for the app <a class="external" href="https://plus.google.com/110558071969009568835/posts/VXTNKuTUYNc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">on Google+</a>, but as he points out, it's nothing groundbreaking. </div>

<strong>Update, the third</strong>: CM updated their blog post to 
remove the assertion that Google told the team that the app was not 
technically in violation of the TOS. The post says that was a 
"mischaracterization of Google’s statement."</div>
