ASUS CEO Jerry Shen Says The Padfone Is Coming To America In 2014

I've been lusting after ASUS' ambitious 
Padfone devices ever since they were announced way back in 2012. But 
since ASUS is a company that focuses on its home market first, we 
haven't seen hide nor hair of the docking smartphone-tablet hybrids over
 here in the United States. According to <a class="external" href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/10/asus-ceo-jerry-shen-padfone-us/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">an Engadget interview with ASUS CEO</a> Jerry Shen, that could change as soon as the second quarter of next year.

The interview is a lengthy one, but the juicy bit is near the end: 
Shen says that ASUS is partnering with a "big operator" in the United 
States to launch the next iteration of the Padfone on our shores. That 
could mean a lot of things, but the conventional wisdom is that a 
successful US phone launch needs the help of at least one of the "Big 
Four" carriers. On the other hand, the Nexus series (which ASUS is quite
 familiar with) and Motorola's Moto X and Moto G are finding plenty of 
customers without them, so I suppose it could also be a major retailer. 
Shen isn't saying any more on the subject at present. </div>

He also indicates that the US (and eventually European) model will be a high-end device, probably <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/09/17/asus-reveals-updated-padfone-infinity-snapdragon-800-510-1-inch-1080p-screen-microsd-slot-and-android-4-2/">a successor to the Padfone Infinity</a> rather than the <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/12/11/asus-formally-announces-the-padfone-mini-4-3-phone-7-tablet-low-specs-and-low-price/">newly-announced Padfone Mini</a>
 which is currently bound for Asian markets. Another boon for premium 
customers and fans of ASUS' Transformer line: the return of a keyboard 
dock. The Padfone line abandoned its keyboard dock, which plugged into 
the tablet dock just like the Transformer series, after the initial 
model. Shen says that better technology to keep the accessory "light, 
slim, and pretty," combined with a considerable demand from power users,
 may lead ASUS to offer the keyboard option again. </div>

ASUS will have a tough go of it, no doubt about it: the company has 
no real experience in the US smartphone market, preferring to stay in 
Asia where the landscape isn't so dominated by carriers. A phone and 
tablet hybrid might be a tough sell to the telecom giants, who would 
probably prefer to sell separate devices with separate monthly data 
plans. Even so, I'm sure they'll find more than a few convergence fans 
eager to hand over their dollars for the next Padfone iteration. Enough 
to bring another after that? We'll just have to wait and see. </div>

manufacturers as it used to, as the latest versions of Sense and 
TouchWiz already use predominantly white icons, with green batteries 
being the primary exception for both. Bright colors might sound like 
they would be easier to pick out from content flowing underneath, but a 
green icon wouldn't stand out well at all against a green background a 
developer used thinking all icons would be white.</div>

Screens of the developer edition HTC One running Android 4.4 show 
that its icon colors thus far remain unchanged, but this build was 
likely prepared before the aforementioned clause was added to the 
Android Compatibility Definition Document on November 27th. HTC has yet 
to launch an official KitKat OTA for any Sense devices tied to a 
carrier.</div>

Google's voice search function
 is undeniably cool, and it's only getting better since the company has 
expanded the capabilities of the Android Search/Google Now app. However,
 there's one tragic flaw in the execution of voice actions: they can't 
make popcorn. But if you add some of Android's most powerful 
root-enabled tools, namely Tasker, the Xposed Framework, and the 
previously-featured AutoVoice, the sky's the limit. With the right hardware and tinkering, you can start living your Starfleet dreams in jig time. Observe:

This combination of tools comes courtesy of João Dias, 
the developer of the AutoVoice Tasker plugin. The latest update to this 
non-Play Store app allows you to launch Tasker actions by speaking 
directly to Google Search via the microphone button or the "OK Google" 
command. (Or you can do a text search, if you want to be boring and 
ordinary.) If you have a Moto X, one of the new DROIDs, or a Nexus 5, 
you can initiate the command without touching your phone. Auto Voice 
uses the Google Now API for the Xposed Framework to "listen" to the 
searches, then interprets them as commands or directions for Tasker. You
 can associate any Tasker action with any search performed in the Google
 Search app. The possibilities are nigh limitless. </div>

Obviously, all of this requires quite a lot of setup. 
You'll need a rooted phone, the Xposed Framework, the Google Now API for
 Xposed, Tasker, and the latest version of the Auto Voice Tasker 
plugin... and that's just the basics. You'll still need to create Tasker
 actions or profiles that do the specific actions you require, and of 
course all the nifty home automation stuff shown in the video requires 
external hardware and setups. Even so, it's an awesome way to interact 
with your device. I hope Google and Android manufacturers are listening.

changes today as Google has finally gotten around to releasing one. The 
app contains all the functionality from the website in a mobile-friendly
 package and it is, of course, free.

of the Android devices on your account. The web version works fine on 
Android devices through the browser, but a native app is still a 
preferable experience. The UI scales to both tablets and phones, and

Android device, like a phone and a tablet. But if you ever misplace one 
of them, you'll be happy to have the ADM app at the ready. In yet 
another sign that Google has a sense of humor, if you locate the device

The most obvious new addition to Gmail 4.7 is the <i>Vacation Responder</i>.
 You can set start and end dates, enter a subject and some text, and 
check a toggle to only send the vacation response to your contacts. 
Finally, you can enable and disable the whole responder with another 
toggle. The vacation responder is certainly a welcome addition to the 
mobile app, considering that by the time you realize you need the 
feature enabled, you may only have your trusty phone or tablet but no 
computer.</div>

I can't believe it's finally here - the feature we've been waiting 
for, since... 2009? Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the 
banishment of the <i>Unfortunately, you can't save or open this type of attachment</i>
 message, which specifically applied to several archive formats, and if 
we're being honest, was the most ridiculous limitation in the name of 
user security and safety I can think of. Zip downloads are finally a go.
 And it's only the end of 2013. Amazing!</div>

We've seen at least one device that could be called a "smart ring" already: the wildly successful NFC Ring.
 But the Smarty Ring, currently accepting funding on Indiegogo, takes 
the idea about five steps further. It's a smartwatch, more or less, 
that's made into a ring form factor. Though it's not quite as capable as
 something like the Pebble, and nowhere near as powerful as the watches 
from Sony or Samsung, the idea is surprisingly attractive.

Basically, the <a class="external" href="http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/smarty-ring" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Smarty Ring</a>
 is a bit of curved circuit board, an LED screen (or two), a tiny 
battery, a diminutive speaker, and a Bluetooth 4.0 radio sitting inside a
 deceptively nondescript stainless steel ring. The full version of the 
device includes an always-on clock face, a series of permanent 
notification icons, and music controls molded into the circular housing.
 As far as capability goes, the ring functions as a clock (with multiple
 time zones, a stopwatch, and a timer), accepts or reject calls (though 
not on the ring itself), trigger your phone's camera, control music 
playback, play an alarm when your phone leaves Bluetooth radius, and of 
course, get notifications from all the standard communications and 
social apps. </div>

I've got to say it's an intriguing little design. The ring itself is 
completely delayed and waterproof, and it charges wirelessly on a 
custom-build pad. The creators are already committed to both iOS and 
Android apps which will manage the Smarty Ring's functions in pretty 
much the same way that current smartwatch apps do. It will be made to 
order in full ring sizes from 5 (15.7mm diameter) all the way up to 15 
(23.83mm diameter), which should cover just about any potential 
customer. Best of all, the ring actually <em>looks good</em> - it's not exactly high fashion, but it's not going for the Dick Tracy meets Star Trek look either. </div>

The Smarty Ring has already reached its $40,000 Indiegogo funding 
goal, and at the time of writing it's sitting at just over $120,000. A 
basic "Tracker" model without any alert or control functions will cost a
 $50 pledge, a Clock version with the added time and alarm functions 
costs $70, the Remote version with the Clock and music controls costs 
$100, and the full-function model will cost you $175. Estimated delivery
 is April of next year. </div>

But hold your horses. The creators haven't actually shown any working
 models. True, they've got a PCB design and a pretty good idea of how 
everything is supposed to work, but all the photos on the Indiegogo page
 and everything in the video is rendered or mocked-up. That doesn't 
inspire confidence in the product, let alone the timetable - even 
smartwatches with near-finished hardware designs take a lot longer than 
four months to go into full production. The campaign also uses 
Indiegogo's flexible funding option, which pays the creators whether or 
not they reach their goal. Lastly, there's no information about the 
people or company behind the project <em>anywhere</em> - not on Indiegogo and not on the <a class="external" href="http://smartyring.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">company web page</a>, which incidentally <a class="external" href="http://whois.net/whois/smartyring.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">has a domain registered with a third party proxy</a>. </div>

None of these observations prove that the Smarty Ring isn't real, but
 they don't bode well, either. The project is funded, so it will go 
forward whether you get a in a pledge in the next 29 hours or not. I've 
backed plenty of crowdfunded projects before, but I'm inclined to let 
the current 644 backers take the risk on this one. I hope it comes to 
fruition. </div>
